COLORED ASPHALT
Colored asphalt is frequently used nowadays, to add a little color to the street view, such as streets and squares. Especially popular in this respect is the color red, for instance colored bicycle paths, pedestrian paths and parking areas. The color of the road surface is determined by the color of the bitumen and the color of the aggregates (chipping). Immediately after construction, the color of the binding agent is dominant and over time, the color of the aggregates becomes increasingly dominant. The choice to use red chippings on the construction of a red bicycle path in stead of traditional mostly grey chippings is recommended. This decreases the dominance of the chippings, which means that the street view shall remain colored.
For the coloration of bitumen, inorganic pigments are suitable in particular, such as iron oxides, chromium oxide, titanium dioxide and mixed types known as cobalt blue. These pigments are light fast and weather resistant. The entire color pallet of the rainbow is technically possible. However, one should take into account the aggregates used.
