THEATRE SQUARE ANTWERP

Theatre Square Antwerp – a modern meeting place to be proud of

The Theatre Square in Antwerp has undergone a complete metamorphosis. The design is from the Italian architectural firm Secchi-Viganò. The transformation of the Theatre Square exists of a green square of which a third is covered by a transparent roof.

The Theatre Square immediately won prices. With the Theatre Square, Antwerp won the “Thuis in de stadwedstrijd” of the Flemish Authorities. With its many cafés and restaurants the Theatre Square is not only an attraction but also an urban square that is furnished sustainably and qualitatively.

The eye-catcher of the new Theatre Square is the large, transparent roof construction which was built for the City Theatre. Compared to the pavement of black concrete, the white steel construction stands out well as a hovering unit.

A second important element in the concept of the design team is the contemporary garden at the Nieuwstad side. It is furnished as a green space and remains free during the market so that one can dwell here quietly at any time of the day.

The new design has turned Nieuwstad into a pedestrian zone. The roof and the garden determine the unique character of the Theatre Square. They bring the square into proportion and in relation with de built environment.

For the black concrete slabs Eurodal (manufacturer of concrete floor slabs) has used liquid iron oxide HS 330 F.

Citizens of Antwerp can again be proud of the square that is growing into an important meeting space in the town!
