SINT JANSTOREN MAASTRICHT

Who thinks of Maastricht thinks of the Sint Janstoren. The colourful reddish tower rises high above the rooftops of the city. This was nevertheless not always the case; the reddish red from a decade ago had faded out and there were plenty of grey parts. This is why the Sint Janstoren was rinsed about a year ago; and now the reddish pride of Maastricht once again towers above all other buildings. This “rinse” consisted of the Scholz colour pigments, namely Bayferrox® 120 M and Bayferrox® 140 M. Two micronized types of iron oxide red.

This was not the first time that the tower was restored; the first restoration took place in 1713. The tower was then recounted and distempered in a yellowish colour. The next restorations took place in 1744, 1774 and in 1822. The tower was painted reddish brown as of 1774. It appears from the text painted on the tower dating from 1822 that L. Sanders has restored the tower and has painted it red.

Last year, the tower was in desperate need of restoration. Only the most urgent repairs were carried out in the eighties and a lot of marl that was badly preserved was at that time maintained for several reasons. The tower was going to be rinsed after the works were finished, for which, based on the old insights that marl should be treated with the uttermost care, the experience that had been gained had to be reassessed and for which a recipe with a better durability had to invented.

In the mean time, lime paints for example have also evolved for systems that are used outside and there are several ideas about systems that support the adhesion, but dissolve themselves afterwards.
